Antigua Wedding Venues and Photoshoot Locations

One of the biggest draws of having a wedding in Antigua, Guatemala is the location. The city is home to several stunning venues, including historic churches, colonial-era ruins, and lush gardens. Many of these locations offer breathtaking views of the surrounding volcanoes and landscape.

One popular wedding venue in Antigua is Iglesia San José El Viejo, an old chapel which was constructed in 1740, and completed in 1761. Today, it is an absolutely beautiful and unique spot to host weddings and events. A lot of the photos you’ll see on this page are from this location. The last couple who’s wedding I photographed here hosted both their ceremony and reception here, which was the perfect setting for their event.

Another popular wedding venue is the Casa Santo Domingo, a 16th-century monastery that has been transformed into a five-star hotel. The property includes several event spaces, including a chapel, a courtyard, and a ballroom.

If you have time, I highly recommend you visit other scenic locations for photos such as the Santa Catalina Arch, Iglesia de la Merced, Hill of the Cross, and the Convento Santa Clara ruins, all of which are pictured here.

Antigua Wedding Traditions

Antigua weddings incorporate many local traditions and customs and it’s important to find a photographer who is familiar with them. One of the most important of these is the use of alfombras, or carpets made of flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Alfombras are laid out on the streets during religious processions, and are also used in weddings to create a beautiful and colorful walkway for the bride and groom.

Another important tradition is the use of candles. Candles are used in many aspects of the wedding, including the ceremony, reception, and procession. They symbolize love, light, and hope for the couple’s future together.

The Food and Drinks of Antigua

Guatemalan cuisine is a blend of Spanish, Mayan, and indigenous influences, and is known for its bold flavors and fresh ingredients. Traditional dishes like chiles rellenos, pepian, and tamales are often served at Antigua, Guatemala weddings.

One popular local specialty is the churrasco, a grilled steak served with a chimichurri sauce. Another popular dish is the pollo en crema, a chicken dish made with cream and mushrooms. No Antigua, Guatemala wedding would be complete without a selection of local drinks. One popular beverage is the michelada, a beer cocktail made with lime juice, hot sauce, and spices. Another popular drink is the Guatemalan coffee, which is known for its smooth and rich flavor. This drink is also quite popular in other nearby regions, such as Mexico. For those who prefer something stronger, the Guatemalan rum is a great option. This rum is made from sugarcane grown in the country’s fertile highlands and is aged for several years in oak barrels.

Antigua, Guatemala weddings are a wonderful blend of local traditions, natural beauty, and modern wedding trends. Whether you’re looking for a historic church, a lush garden, or a colonial-era ruin, this city has something for everyone.
