MEET SEAN LARA
Sean is based in Colorado and has been a full-time wedding photographer since 2010. Specializing in environmental portraiture, he’s best known for incorporating a variety of unique off-camera flash techniques that have won him awards with WPPI, ISPWP, WPJA and Fearless. In 2020, he was listed as one of the top ten photographers in the world by the Wedding Photojournalist Association. As an ambassador for MagMod, Geekoto, Holdfast and others, you can find him regularly on the web and at education events instructing other professionals on how to get more creative with off-camera flash and their business.
FROM PAST BOOTCAMP STUDENTS
When Sean came to me and mentioned he was having a workshop, I immediately registered that day. I’ve admired Sean’s creativity and his bold and vibrant style, and he stands out to me as one of the top in the country. The takeaways from this workshop far succeed my expectations. I learned so many “big deal” tips and tricks, that my work is going to go to the next level overnight. Maybe 2 levels. I’m so happy with my experience and I can’t wait for the next workshop!!
Wedding Photography Bootcamp was one of my most memorable experiences of the past year. From the epic views of Rocky Mountain National Park to forming a camaraderie of photographers with diverse backgrounds from around the country, this experience was a blast. We covered lots of common OCF techniques as well as how Sean creates his signature images against the vivid mountain top backdrops. The 3rd day of the workshop was especially well worth the price of admission which is where we talked about business strategy and how to raise profits, price yourself, and run a profitable enterprise. This was by far the best day for me with lots of "nuggets" of wisdom I have implemented into my own business model. One thing I'll note is that altitude sickness is real, especially if you are from Philly or some other low-lying area. Heading up to 8000ft was no easy task. Get there a couple of days early to give yourself time to adjust.
Sean's workshop was so incredibly helpful and insightful. He covered so many important topics and ways to make my photography and business stand out above so many others. During the hands-on portion, he gave excellent encouragement and critique. I really appreciated that Sean pushed us to think critically about our settings and what exactly we were trying to accomplish and what our end game was with our images. He was a great teacher and was very generous in all he shared with his experiences and the things he does on the business side that are key to the overall success of a photographer. I would highly recommend this workshop for photographers who are already at least somewhat familiar with off-camera flash and who want to learn to stand out from the sea of other photographers and take their skills to the next level.
Sean's Wedding Photography Bootcamp jumped started the business side of my photography journey with in-depth breakouts on SEO, marketing, contracts, and automated software suggestions. His technical photograph approach with his students was simple but purposeful for all experience levels. He continues to serve as a mentor, a friend, and just all-around a good person.
I learned so much about off-camera flash techniques at Sean's Wedding Photography Bootcamp, as well as a lot of good business information! It has helped me advance my business, my photography skills, and wow my clients! Sean is a great instructor. He is very enthusiastic, knowledgeable about photography, and is able to break down specific techniques so they are easy to understand. I'd highly recommend his workshop to anyone!
Sean was a great teacher and taught me a lot in the 3-day Bootcamp! I learned how to: properly use my 70-200mm lens, utilize a higher aperture like f9 to f11, professionally respond to potential clients, and other bits of information like scheduling the best days for elopements and engagement sessions. The hands-on learning was my biggest takeaway, especially with other photographers at different levels. I recommend this type of hands-on learning over a traditional photography conference any day.
If you’re traveling from out of state, you’ll want to fly into Denver International Airport. From there, you can rent a car and drive up to Estes Park. The drive is about an hour and a half from the airport.
Even though technically April falls in the Spring, plan and expect for Winter weather as Estes Park is in the Mountains. Layering is key. We will mainly be indoors but there will also be an outdoor photography portion so dress accordingly.
Estes Park is at 7,500ft in elevation, and some people do experience shortness of breath, headaches, dizziness, and dehydration. I recommend that a week before the wedding, you drink more water than you usually do. 3 days beforehand, limit alcohol consumption and during your stay, hydrate frequently, and be prepared with aspirin or CBD. On your first day at altitude, limit physical activity to allow your body to acclimate.
